In private life Gourdie was remembered as entertaining man with an exacting but generous nature and a lively sense of humour. The recommendations for Gourdie’s work here on FPN convinced me to give his books a go, and after looking at some others too – Eager, Fairbank and co.
He then returned to Fife as an art teacher at Kirkcaldy High School, where he remained tillafter which he retired early from his school teaching career in order to give more attention to calligraphy and to the national and international promotion of the teaching of handwriting. For his services to calligraphy he was made an MBE in I only have “Italic Handwriting” here with me at the moment, so can’t check “Handwriting for Today” for specifics, but it is a more comprehensive book.
In his later life Gourdie gained recognition throughout Britain as an expert calligrapher.
He has 2 that I can think of – “Handwriting”, a Ladybird book small hardbacks most folks in the UK and Ireland will fondly recalland “The Puffin Book of Handwriting”, a little more comprehensive than the first, but very useful – that’s what I started off with, doing all the drills using a pencil, for a couple of hours a day, weeks on end, before progressing on to the 2 books you mention.
After he was demobilised Gourdie took his teaching diploma and taught art at Banff Academy in The Society of Handwriters made him a life member – the scroll being presented by uandwriting president, Humphrey Lyttelton.
