She was given political asylum by Cuba, where she now resides. The political climate was extremely hostile and the police behaved lawlessly, but Assata’s narrative gives the impression of loosely united activism and awakening resistance among a wider population socialised into believing white supremacist memes about blackness.
How she gets to Cuba is information Shakur omits of course, what has she told us in this autobiography? Yet, I am not entirely sure I would sbakur with all of Assata’s views and ideologies.

The recent events in Ferguson, Missouri, have left black communities in the United States in a state of shock that has quickly given way to unsurprised disdain. I had no idea who Assata Shakur was before this book. As long as we expect amerika’s schools to educate us, we will remain ignorant. Just because you believe in self-defense doesn’t mean you let yourself be sucked into defending yourself on the enemy’s terms We see our children frustrated at best.
